A Web-Documentary by Christoph Kober
Mangueira – Life in a Rio de Janeiro Favela
Rio de Janeiro, city of dreams. Just the name evokes images of beauty, glamour, and success. But not far from the breathtaking beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema is another side of Rio. Hundreds of thousands of people live in shantytowns, the favelas, that creep up the city's hillsides. Most of the dwellings are illegally constructed and occupied; power and water supplies are poor at best. And the neighborhoods are often controlled by drug gangs. Christoph Kober's web-documentary provides a glimpse into a world normally closed to outsiders. It takes you on a guided tour of Mangueira, one of Rio's oldest favelas.
